Queen Elizabeth II officially launched UNBC with 1,500 students in 1994, two years later the Prince George university building was completed.
UNBC is Canada’s Green University for its teaching, research, energy initiative, and day-to-day sustainability. Green University Centre. The University of Northern British Columbia (UNBC) is a tiny public university in British Columbia, Canada, that focuses on research. Prince George, British Columbia, is home to the main campus. UNBC also has regional campuses in Prince Rupert, Terrace, Quesnel, and Fort St. John in northern British Columbia. UNBC had 3,570 students enrolled in the 2019–20 school year. The Northern Medical Program (NMP), a collaboration between UBC and UNBC, garnered prominence for the university. Several academic physicians have been attracted to the city as a result of this collaboration, resulting in the formation of an academic medical community.

Academic oncologists like Dr. Robert Olson have been drawn to the BC Cancer Agency Centre for the North, for example. The university’s governance was modelled after the provincial University of Toronto Act 1906, which established a bicameral system of university government with a Senate (made up of faculty members) in charge of academic policy and a Board of Governors (made up of community members) in charge of financial policy and formal authority in all other matters. The President, who was chosen by the board, was to serve as a liaison between the two bodies and to govern the institution.
